Cowichan Indian Sweaters are classed as one of the finest hand knitted garments in the world. The art of making these sweaters was taught to the Cowichan Indians by Scottish settlers from the Shetland Islands. Though originally only for their own use, the warmth and durability of Cowichan knitting has created a world wide demand. Fortunately, the art continues to be passed down to new generations.
The first steps in making a sweater is finding the right shades of white, black and grey wool of high quality that still retains much of its natural lanolin. Thus the water repellant quality. The wool is then hand spun, and finally knitted into these popular and stylish garments.
