Pipes

Aboriginal Made Pipestone

The ceremonial pipe, common to the upper mid-west Native Americans, was used in all of their ceremonies. The "pipe" was also used in all treaty negotiations and thus was labeled "peace pipe" by non-aboriginals. The pipe is the receptacle that holds the "sacred tobacco" used in ceremonies. Native people believed that when the smoke was drawn into the mouth and blown toward the found directions, that the smoke carried their prayers to the "Creator".

Pipes were made from many diffrent materials. Earliest pipes were made from bone, clay, sandstone, argillite and steatite. These materials were used long before "pipestone" (Catlinite) was discovered. These early materials were not durable or too hard to work with primitive tools.
